About the artist:

I’m a self-taught artist from the small yet growing town of Marshall, Texas. Growing up, I was surrounded by strong, creative, and influential woman. Both of my grandmothers and mother were skillful seamstresses. My grandmothers took pride in working for Levi for several years.

My art journey started when I didn’t have money to pay my bills in my mid-20s. I took the little money I had left and invested it into art supplies. I went home, turned on some music, and let my emotions flow through the paintbrush onto the canvas. The one-of-a-kind pieces that I created, I sold out of my car for extra money.

People got excited about my art. I grew support quickly from those who appreciated my talent and pushed me to sign up for my first art festival at the Red River Revel in Shreveport Louisiana. The Red River Revel became a turning point as more people were drawn to my art, and other artists encouraged me to share more of my creativity with the world.

I was moved by people’s faith in me and decided to enroll in school. The only thing I could not teach myself to do was to make clothes, so I enrolled at the Art Institute of Dallas. I received my Fine Arts Undergrad Degree in fashion design. This degree took my art to the next level as I started adding textiles.

As years went on and my art continued to elevate, I gained more confidence. I signed up for more art festivals. This year, I decided that I would become a full-time artist. I am grateful for all the amazing artist that have shared their knowledge with me and people who believe in me. I am excited to travel this year to different shows across the US and sharing my inner world with the world.

About the artist:

Shreveport has been my home for the majority of my life, and my journey has been a quest to discover a space where I belong. During my search I have become a versatile artist who explores various mediums, drawn to expressions that evoke profound emotions and resonate with the audience. When I go to new places where I don’t know any of the faces, I feel as if I am a mosquito on the wall and my gaze wanders freely, observing the ebb and flow of people coming and going. What people wear, how they walk, how slow and how fast all tell the start of a journey to an end.

My eyes are drawn to the spaces on the floor and people moving around me, all keeping the space and keeping pace in place. Shoes all carry individuals to various destinations, changing their stride, giving the owner's confidence or causing them to stumble. The shoes in store windows, the ones by my back door, and the ones in my closet are still and empty. Each pair of shoes, when worn, occupy a purposeful meaning in space. This collection is a visual representation of shoes in place and in motion, curated from photographs from the Instagram account @shoesinplace269. Immerse yourself in the journey of these shoes—each step a narrative, each space a story. Enjoy the exhibition!

About the artist:

The usual reaction to my work is shock. The dark, anxious and at times grotesque subject seems incongruitous with the chipper and self-assured artist that claims credit. The truth is that the levity of my persona is a product of this deep exploration of my emotional state. The brightest lights cast the longest shadows. What I present in this exhibition, titled “Faces of a Man,” are the expressions of my spirit during various trials leading up to this point in my life. These are the faces that I could not bear to the world. I would state reasons such as professionalism or intimacy for not expressing these things, but reflection makes me question those motives. Maybe I was too afraid to show these faces until now? Look, then. I need you to see these now. I am ready for you to see a countenance that is more than skin deep.
